Jonathan Chambalin Nigerian, b. 1995

Jonathan Chambalin is a Nigerian multidisciplinary artist based in Lagos state. He works across various mediums, including large-scale installations, motion stills, painting and photography.  
 
Chambalin obtained a BA in Performing Arts and Mass Communication from the University of Benin (2017). In 2022, he participated in a Factum Foundation programme facilitated by MOWAA, focusing on the documentation and digital preservation of the Benin bronzes.
In 2019, he secured a grant as an exhibiting artist for the Re-Entanglement project, in collaboration with the University of London and the Cambridge  Museum. In 2020, he also participated in the Rele Young Contemporaries residency programme.
 
In 2025, Chambalin debuted his first solo exhibition, Umuneji Flamingo, at  Adegbola Gallery, Lagos. Through a blend of painting, metal sculpture and kinetic installations, he explores themes of familial obligation, cultural legacy and personal connection. His work has since been shortlisted for the upcoming 2026 Intercontinental Biennale in Panama and Central America. 
 
Following his solo show and biennale nomination, Chambalin has been featured in several prestigious publications and platforms, including Elephant Magazine (UK), BBC World Service, the African Artists' Foundation (AAF), Art Joburg, and the Bonn Museum in Germany. 
Through his dynamic visual practice, Chambalin continues to push boundaries, exploring the intersections of indigenous technology, media, culture, and contemporary expression.
