Theresa Luck-Akinwale is a Nigerian painter renowned for her accomplished portraiture and lasting commitment to arts education. Born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, she received her early education in Lagos before formally training in Fine Arts at the Nazareth Teacher’s Training College, Epe.
She furthered her studies through external study and formal tuition in Commercial Art at Bennett College, Sheffield, earning a diploma in 1958. Luck-Akinwale went on to study at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London, and later at the City and Guilds of London Art School, where she obtained a Diploma in Fine Art in 1964.
During her years in Britain, she worked as an art educator while illustrating books for Thomas Nelson Publishers and the University of London Press. Her exceptional skill in portraiture led to high-profile commissions of notable global and Nigerian figures, including Haile Selassie, Obafemi Awolowo, Shehu Shagari, John F. Kennedy, and Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1977, Luck-Akinwale returned to Nigeria, where she made significant contributions to arts pedagogy, teaching at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and later at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). Through both her practice and mentorship, she plays a vital role in shaping the next generations of Nigerian artists.
